Dear Colleagues!

On behalf of your Board of Directors of the Central District Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys Assn (“cdcbaa”), I am proud to announce that Ms. Tara Twomey of NACBA has accepted cdcbaa’s nomination as the 2012 Calvin Ashland Attorney of the Year Award.  Ms. Twomley is extremely active and successful in furthering the cause and protection of consumers in the bankruptcy field of law.  The date for the 2012 Calvin Ashland Award is Thursday, November 15th.

Please feel free to spread the word as to our Award winner.

Also, as an aside, the Los Angeles Marriott hotel on Figuera (our hotel) will lose its branding with Marriott effective August 6th, 2012 and will be henceforth referred to as the LA HOTEL until a new management company is selected.  Just an FYI.

First Time for Everything: My First Webinar

On August 7, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., Peter Lively and I will teach a webinar entitled “Chapter 11: Handling the Individual Chapter 11 Case.”  Should be good.  Peter and I met yesterday to review the program and were arguing about something and pulling out our respective codes within minutes.  We are preparing a powerpoint slide which can be followed while we talk.  The program will be geared to the fairly sophisticated chapter 11 practitioner.

Prof. Katie Porter Program at cdcbaa

Prof. Katie Porter put on a great program, entitled, Ten Bankruptcy Myths, this morning at Southwestern Law School.  She started by telling us that we in the Central District are kind of weird, or strange, or odd, I forget the term she used.  “You are outliers,” she said.  The results of the statistical studies she works on often skew to the central district because we are such a large portion of the total.  The talk focused on who files bankruptcy, why, and the effects of things like BAPCPA, filing without a lawyer, race, and the stigma of filing.  For example, she easily convinced us that the stigma of filing a bankruptcy petition is as huge as ever.  Most people treat filing bankruptcy as equal to a death in the family.  And the people who file are more likely to be older than younger, etc. etc.  I highly recommend the program if you get a chance to go see her.

You may know, “In March 2012, Prof. Porter was appointed by California Attorney General Kamala Harris to be the state’s independent monitor of banks in a nationwide $25 billion mortgage settlement.”  If you have a question about that, she can be reached at CAMonitor@doj.ca.gov.

Prof. Katie Porter to Speak at cdcbaa Program June 23, 2012

Next cdcbaa MCLE Program is sure to be a hit:

*Bankruptcy Mythbusters* *June 23, 2012*
*Southwestern Law School – 3050 Wilshire Boulevard – Westmoreland Building – 3rd Floor*

Panelist: Katherine Porter, A UC Irvine Law Professor.

General Meeting: 10:30am, CLE 11:00am-1:00pm

Many of you may know Prof. Porter as a UC Irvine Law Professor who was recently named by Attorney General Kamala Harris to serve as monitor of the mortgage settlement between California and five of the nation’s largest banks.  She is a nationally recognized expert in commercial and consumer law, has written several research articles taking aim at the banks and loan servicers for their [okay I’ll say it] FRAUD.  She is well versed in the mortgage crisis from a consumer perspective. Prof. Katie Porter CV

On October 15, 2011 Prof. Porter presented her Bankruptcy Mythbusters program at the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges and received great reviews by some of our own judges and was mentioned in this blog article: National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges–10/15/2011 Mythbusters, by Stephen Sather.  This article is only a glimpse of what’s to come at our event. This should be very enlightening.

She has a book, Broke: How Debt Bankrupts the Middle Class by Stanford Press, 2012.  Those of us that read and/or write blogs know her contributions to Credit Slips blog as a co-founder and contributor.

By clicking on any of the links provided herein you will find plenty of information regarding her contributions to consumers, her country and our practice. We are certainly privileged to have her as our guest for our next MCLE event.

See you all there!
